Making An Example Out Of ‘Contoh’ In Brunei Art Scene

Growing up, I have been told time and time again that I should not care what others think.  However, I’m willing to make an exception this one time, because I’m curious to know what’s on your mind after you’ve paid for tickets for ‘Contoh’.

This week is your last chance to check out some thought-provoking art installations on display in Sengkurong.

The three people involved in this exhibition are Faiq AirudinYasmin Jaidin and Ian Chan, who made his debut in the Brunei art scene during the “45/7: Alinea” (pronounced as 45 past 7) in December 2019.

Earlier this week, the Neue team sat down with Osveanne Osman, the Manager and Curator of Space Art Gallery & Studio in Brunei, to learn more about the ‘Contoh’ exhibition, which has been extended until this Sunday (August 9).

So what’s the significance of ‘Contoh’ exhibition?

Well, according to Ian, it’s being able to talk about key issues in society that people easily overlook in their busy lives.

“Art becomes a medium for exchanging ideas and to open up cemented opinions,” he said in a telephone interview with Neue.
