A majority of communication among family, friends and work has indefinitelymoved online. Whatsapp – the Facebook owned platform dominates public discourse and remains pivotal in everyday life. From making plans with friends, keeping in contact with relatives to higher level decision making, Whatsapp groups are fundamental to being a citizen in modern society.
A mainstay of this are ‘Good morning’ or ‘Selamat Pagi’ graphics. While the lines between professional and personal are increasingly blurred due to ease of access through Whatsapp, ‘Selamat Pagi’ graphics are an attempt at authenticity in a form of communication that is expecting more and more from us.
After visiting the Andy Warhol’s solo show at the Stable Gallery in 1964 Arthur Danto famously declared it was “the end of western art”. It was such a shock for him to see such work in a gallery. I heard him talk in London over 10 years ago. He was an eminent Warhol academic and during the talk shared the moment he came across Brillo box sculptures by Andy Warhol.
‘Selamat Berlepas’ explores the boundaries of Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), Brunei Darussalam’s capital city. In 2007 the area was expanded making it ten times larger than the first boundary that wes drawn up in 1956. According to 2018 statistics one sixth of Brunei’s population live in the capital, it has some of the most iconic landmarks and scenery. It’s no surprise that BSB has been an artistic fixation providing a backdrop for artistic work and the impetus to create it. The most contemporary creative reflections have been a spoken word piece by May Cho ‘When in Bandar’ and art installation by Ian Chan ‘Se Tin Santan’. While paintings by established artists such as Pg M Roslan or Haji Dayang provide an ordered and pleasant version that’s found along the waters of Sungai Brunei.
